An iconic bridge with a history of warfare.The bridge was the site of a treaty between the French occupiers and the local resistance forces in the Turkish War of Independence. The French surrendered and were allowed to retreat under safe conduct from Urfa, however, possibly due to a misunderstanding, the French were subsequently massacred during the retreat. It’s a sad piece of history, but worth remembering regardless. Nearby stand a reconstructed aqueduct and an Ottoman era bridge.
